:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Tsar Joe -- Mystery and historical Fiction Fans alike will enjoy this book : While I'm not a big mystery fan, I enjoy historical fiction and this book was full of interesting historical tidbits. The Las Cruces, NM setting was also a draw for me. And, I have to admit, the mystery plot was compelling, I especially like the author's literary allusions one of which particularly peaked my interest . It was about a poem by Langston Hughes which I looked up and read with great interest. Herrington's research and literate writing make this a fun and informative read. I highly recommend. Fans of Herrington's first two books will find Pack of Scoundrels even more interesting. Pack of Scoundrels is set in Las Cruces, NM, where David has a summer job. There he steps into a nest of ex-Nazis and their cohorts, all the while deepening his romantic relationship with Judy. Herrington has an artist's eye for detail about the settings of his novels, a listener's ear for the dialogue of his characters, and a puzzler's mind for his ability to tell a tale. Mystery fans will love the plot, based, as all of Herrington's work is, on historical facts. A good solid tale that is rated family fare for all readers. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mark -- Great mystery in Las Cruces : Growing up in the 50’s and 60’s, I always considered Wernher von Braun to be the father of our space program and never questioned whether he or the other German rocket scientists had contributed to the atrocities during the second world war. That Herrington’s book makes me reassess those beliefs goes well beyond a well written mystery. Herrington’s characters and writing have matured from earlier books. It was a good read. Well writen. : The theme that Government actions and policy are more important than human lives and truth applies as much today as it did back in 1954. The local Las Cruces, NM historial references make the the story very personal and informative. Factual aspects in the book were well researched. Recommend highly! - 5.0 out of 5 stars from PAW -- A well written mystery! : This was my third David Elliott Mystery and the growth in David Elliott along with Herrington’s writing skills and plot perplexities was amazing! I love mysteries and this one really was full of the twists and turns that made it a captivating read for me. I have visited the Las Cruses and White Sands area several times and found that reading about the Organ Mountains, the ride to Dripping Springs and White Sands made it all the more pleasurable. As with other Herrington novels and short stories I found that I was not just entertained but also educated. I found myself doing some outside research in order to understand and stay up to speed with the plot. On a much lighter note I loved the Chicken Lady! I highly recommend Pack of Scoundrels: A David Elliott Mystery. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2019 )
